Health Care In Nova Scotia
When I first started working for the public health care system in 2006, care was delivered by 9 different health authorities across the province of Nova Scotia. This all changed on April 1st, 2015 when Bill No. 1 (the Health Authorities Act, found here) amalgamated all 9 authorities into one - the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA). This allowed for provincial planning but local delivery of health care.

Where do I fit?
I started my career in the public health sector in 2006, when I was hired into a physiotherapy position with the Capital District Health Authority (now known as the Central Zone of the NSHA). After working as a physiotherapist within the neurosciences programs for 9 years, I decided to try a different role within health care. In 2015, I transitioned from direct patient care into the Professional Practice Coordinator role for physiotherapy.
This position is within the Inter-professional Practice & Learning (IPP&L) portfolio. The mandate of the IPP&L portfolio is to facilitate and advance collaborative person-centered care, a key priority in Nova Scotia.
The 3 pillars that guide this work are:
My work has focused on:
-
Supporting and advancing physiotherapy professional practice and inter-professional collaborative practice/education
-
Developing, maintaining and sharing evidence-informed practice
-
Building on the capacity of health care providers and teams
I do this work through the development and facilitation of education, from both discipline-specific and inter-disciplinary perspectives. I encourage an environment of learning by leveraging knowledge and resources at the point of care, and by considering best practices and principles of knowledge translation. The patient's values, preferences, and needs are at the center of my work.
