Reflection
To date, I have approached Social Media as a tool for personal use, with no consideration given to potentials within a professional setting. By failing to be reflective as to the purpose of the tools I have created, I have missed out on opportunities, and have fallen behind current trends.
The thought provoking comments and ideas from my classmates (G. Tucker, G. Young, L. Nguyen) have opened my mind to the potentials (both positive and negative), and have forced me to consider alternatives to my perspective. When used correctly, Social Media can be powerful communication and content curation tools. As a professional, I feel an obligation to add to, and support, the objective, reasonable and accurate information available.
Professional Obligations
With that in mind, I have reviewed obligations to my employer and regulatory body, and have created my criteria for engagement:
1. Follow ‘best practice’ guidelines to which I am bound (Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists, Nova Scotia Health Authority), including such things as:
a. Maintaining a separation between private and professional use of Social Media platforms
b. Refraining from providing information that can be construed as professional advice to individuals.
2. Create a professional portfolio that reflects my professional identity and values.
3. In the words of @boe_selena, my professional posts will be “respectful, inclusive, honest and objective” and will refrain from being “ignorant, aggressive or deceptive”.
Plan
At this time, I plan to develop a professional ePortfolio with Wix within which I will include links to my professional LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. In the future, I will continue to explore other technologies as they are developed, and compare their use against both my list of criteria and my intentions/purpose for their use.
